Dec
11, 2007 The
management of the Grand Bend Motorplex
and IHRA have entered into an Agreement
that will make Grand Bend the site
of the first IHRA Pro-Am racing event
in Canada, August 22-24, 2008.
“We’re proud to be hosting this event. The Summit Pro-Am Tour is
a perfect addition to our racing season here at GBM.” Said Paul Spriet,
Chief Operating Officer of the Motorplex. “We were honored to bring IHRA
National event drag racing into Canada in 2000, and we’re honored to do
the same thing with the IHRA Sportsman Series.” The event will feature
Summit Pro-Am points-races each day, allowing racers two chances to win points
and purse in one weekend. GBM also plans to run specialty classes both days to
allow every competitor to do as much racing as possible while they’re on
site.
The double event will feature all Summit Pro-Am classes: Top Sportsman, Top
Dragster, Quick Rod, Super Rod and Hot Rod. Also competing will be the always
popular, Super Stock and Stock classes.
Grand Bend Motorplex, the home of the Mopar Canadian Nationals presented by
Castrol, is located just outside the popular resort town of Grand Bend, The
track is only a five minute drive from the beaches, shops and nightlife of
town, making it a popular stop for racers looking for some R & R (Racing
and Relaxing) Grand
Bend Motorplex is pleased to
announce, that Teamsters Canada
Locals 879 and 880 have confirmed
their involvement as the primary
advertiser for GBM’s marquee
event, the Labour Day “Thunder
By the Beach” presented
by Castrol.
Teamsters local 879 President,
Joe McLean is enthusiastic about
the
new relationship. “This is
such a natural fit for our Southwestern
Ontario members that I’m surprised
the people at the Motorplex didn’t
approach us earlier. For over a century,
the Teamsters have represented the
interests of the labour force both
in the United States and Canada.” Frank
Biekx, President of Teamsters Local
880 added; “To get involved
with this exciting event, on the
one holiday weekend dedicated to
the working man and woman, makes
all the sense in the world to us.
It’s a great chance to
entertain our team members in
879 and 880.”
The Teamsters Canada “Thunder
by the Beach” presented by
Castrol is the largest independent
drag racing event in Canada, featuring
an on-track battle between Nitro

Bend Motorplex gets help from
Sponsors to add the Ultimate
in track cleanup equipment (a
Sweeper/Scrubber unit) to its
facility.
“Ever
since we witnessed how well these
units can cleanup an oil spill
in the ¼ mile, we have wanted
to add one, but the cost was just
a little bit out of reach,” says
track manager Ron Biekx. “So
like I did with our vacuum truck
a few years ago I went to our sponsors
for some help. They came through
with flying colours, just like
I hoped they would”.
“ First, I
want to thank our sponsors. We
couldn’t have done this without
them” says Paul Spriet track
operator. “I feel our sponsors
supported this acquisition because
many of them are racers themselves,
and they are interested in promoting
the sport for all involved. They
know that the biggest headache
and delay in completing a drag
racing program is the time it takes
to cleanup an oil down, especially
one that occurs in the first ¼ mile
of the racing surface”.
According to Spriet “This new process is the
way both of the major sanctioning bodies, and some
of the major racing facilities, cleanup at their national
events and weekly programs. Everyone we talked with
about this process loves how it works”
Biekx explains “The
old way to cleanup the spill is
to apply an absorbent over the
spill, brush it in, and then sweep
and/or vacuum it up. The problem
with this process is the absorbent
can get blown across the entire
track, requiring twice as much
cleanup time. The absorbent also
adheres to the glue on the racetrack,
making it hard to pickup. This
can make the track slippery and
requires the lanes to be re-glued.
The new sweeper/scrubber unit does away with this process.
It works by applying a hot soapy solution to breakdown
the oil, brushing it in to loosen any residual oil,
and then vacuuming up the mixture, all in one action.
What would have taken us an hour before can now be
done in as little as 20 minutes, plus it leaves the
racing surface in pristine racing condition. It is
better and safer for the competitors, and it reduces
the downtime for the fans. Plus, this unit comes with
an added bonus; it can be run as a vacuum unit only.
After a rain we now have 2 vacuum units to help dry
off the track, plus our track dryer for the shutdown
area.”
Biekx
finished by saying; “We definitely
want to extend special thanks to
the folks from Sarnia Drywall Supply
for loaning us their trailer and
the guys at Bluewater Ford for loaning
us the F250 that made molehills out
of the mountains of Tennessee and
Kentucky when it was time to pick
the unit up.”
This addition, along
with a new track surface (to be
completed in late May), will keep
Grand Bend Motorplex at the forefront
of Canadian drag racing facilities.
Grand
Bend Motorplex is one of Canada’s
premier racing facilities featuring
both drag racing and Motocross
events. It is home to the biggest
drag racing event in Eastern Canada
- The 8th Annual Mopar Canadian
Nationals presented by Castrol,
July 20-22, 2007, plus many other
large events from May to October.

the World Finals in Rockingham on October

Each
Summit SuperSeries track will determine
a “performance Rating” winner
by September 11th based on the
first 30 rounds, win or lose. PR

run each other at the Summit Team
Finals in their division. Due to
the late date of the Division 1

will advance to the World Finals.
Competitors
whose tracks do not participate
in the Summit Team Finals due to
travel distance will have their
tracks PR score measured against
the other tracks that can not travel
(Alaska, Aruba, etc.). The highest
score from these tracks will fill
two of the remaining spots for
the World Finals run off. If the
highest score person can not attend,
we will go down the list until
a competitor is found to travel
to Rockingham.
Didn’t
finish first at your track? You
still have a chance at the Summit
World Championship! All SSS participants
that finished the year with a .601
or better PR are eligible for the
end of the year lottery. Two lucky
winners from each class will win
the right to compete at Rockingham.
The
race for the World Championship
will be run on a 1/4 mile format.
Crosstalk will NOT be used. The
use of trans brakes, two steps
and automated shifters in the No
Box category is permitted. If bike
or sled wins they will run against
cars. The competitors will be run
on a ladder. The Division 1 winner
runs the second lottery winner
chosen, the Division 2 winner runs
the first lottery winner chosen,
Division 3 winner runs the “at
large” winner and the division
4 winner runs the Division 5 winner.
Competitors will cut cards for
